Yeah, I'm back to relying on my over-the-air antenna again, and
sometimes the signal strength starts to lessen or a channel sometimes doesn't come in at all, which is annoying. Locast was a great way to be able to watch local channels easily, without getting a premium TV
service.

Its weird how we have to pay for retransmission of local channels compared to antenna. Maybe we should have a rule where if your at a certain income you dont have to pay as much for local channels.

It is weird. I guess retransmission costs money for the equipment & effort & things required to do the retransmission. I was perfectly willing to donate to Locast to keep it going - and just a couple weeks ago, I actually donated $60 for a year to Locast. Now that they've ceased operating so quickly, I feel kinda burned that I donated that not too long ago..

YouTube TV and Hulu with live TV are a couple alternatives to Locast where you can straem local TV, but each of those are about $65/month. I don't think I'd want to pay that just to be able to watch local TV channels. I know they have other content, but I'm not sure I'm interested in that right now. I think $5/month (or $60/year) for the ability to watch local TV seems a lot more reasonable to me.

I have a friend in the U.K. who says they have a method where they can
detect what broadcast channels you watch with an antenna and -still- charge
you for the service! At least we're not like that here... yet.

The issue with locast was a legal issue that they lost very similar to
Aereo where the 'media giants' sued for copywrite infringements. I'm going
to guess locast is going to somehow find a way to restructure and come back from the story I read. It seems that in the summary judgement their business model didn't meet that of a non-profit which makes it appear that's what they needed to be viewed as in order not to infringe on the copywrites.

I'm not sure how they'd do that.. For that to work, I'd think the TV would have to be connected to the internet or some other form of communications to send information back somewhere, and the TV would have to be set up with the viewer's information. These days though, I suppose a smart TV could include something to send usage information through the internet behind the scenes without the viewer knowing..

Locast was a new one for me... Sad it's gone, and yeah I pay for Hulu,
Netflix, etc. but not 'local' stuff. I'm like you, just don't watch enough...

They have a device that's part of their antenna system for the local tv
set that measures what freqs the TV is pulling in and rebroadcasts it to
the BBC from what I was told. No internet or phone line is required. It
sounds like a very sneaky system but it works for them I guess.
