• Dedicated Synchronet Host

From Marisag@VERT/AMIGAC to All on Wed Aug 21 16:11:00 2019
I am a long-time BBS Sysop and fan (since the 70's & 80's) and now I offer Linux Synchronet BBS hosting for $14/month, with first month free.

I evaluated the various Linux BBS offerings and in my opinion Synchronet is the most actively updated and feature-rich BBS platform. Supports email, web interface, full support for native & DOS-based doors without needing extra plugins etc. If you are interested go to https://SynchronetBBS.org/HostSplash and get mo0re info. I will ask if you want to keep the server when the month is up.

What's included? Linux 64-bit server with 2gb of RAM and 50gb of SSD. More than enough for a BBS. Servers are in one of a selection of datacenters (your choice). We also can preload over 100 door games and BBSLink & DoorParty games if desired.

Interested in working with you and hope to talk with you further! Be sure to check out our Synchronet doors at https://SynchronetBBS.org as well...

This is a very good value. Whether your're a new Sysop or one returning to the BBS scene this is a great place to start your BBS. MarisaG is very knowlegable and can be very helpful. You get one month free so there's nothing to lose. Why not give it a shot??

If I wasn't happy with my Pi, I'd be tempted myself. But I like running my BBSs locally.

Same here, and it costs less than $14/mo that way too. :-)

The one thing about not hosting lolcally is that it is dependant on your local power, ISP provider, and bandwidth. Having it in a datacenter can alievieate those issues...

True, though one good thing about hosting it locally is that you have complete control over the computer it's running on and the software on it. If it's hosted in the cloud, then you are dependant on the cloud service and its bandwidth and power, etc.. The cloud service could lose its internet connectivity or power too..

On a Pi, that's true, on server class hardware, highly debateable over here. :)

Yep, there are pros and cons either way. It's good to have options. :) My situation is:

Power for a Pi is miniscule. Reliability is always an issue, and backup power won't help, an outage will take out the VDSL node down the road anyway. But if I put a USB 4G dongle on the router as backup Internet, that would keep IPv4 connectivity (via the OpenVPN tunnel) working. One advantage with being local is that nodelist management is easier (for my Othernet), because I can edit the master nodelist on my Windows PC, and the BBS can do the automated weekly processing on a mounted SMB share, then hatch the nodelist and infopack. :) It would be trickier to do over the Internet, though not impossible.

Data volume is unlimited here anyway. Not that a BBS uses much. Data rate is effectively around 30Mbps symmetric, because of the properties of the VPN tunnel and endpoints. My ISP is pretty geek friendly too. :)

But if I find myself needing to host offsite, I know where to go. :)

I took my BBS down for a hiatus in 2000, I needed the phone line for my consulting business. It felt weirdly quiet when I turned the box off.

Synchronet came to my attention a year or two later and I relaunched the BBS as a telnet node.

Yeah I had to wait a lot longer to put a BBS back online. The main BBS went offline around 1998 I think. My point lasted until 2001, when I switched to cable Internet, which made the SMTP gateway hard to feed - I was using the point for mailing lists and Usenet.
