Updated to nightly build and sbbs crashes on startup (WinXP x86). I couldn't get the debug information to load. I don't have a complier running. Could something have broken the nightly recently?

Current build is dated 7/8/2019, so I'm guessing recent changes are to blame.

I'll try to get error codes if possible, maybe someone point me to some debug info? error.log seems uninformed.

Looks like you're running on an older sbbs build. Did you update your source code and rebuild?

Looks like you're running on an older sbbs build. Did you update your source code and rebuild?

Updated source, but I have no clue how to build sbbs using Windows. I haven't been sucessful since I somehow managed to get Visual Studio 2013 working, but that stopped working, so I tried VS2019, but it can't find the v141_xp build tools I think, and I have no idea how to point to the 3rdp libraries (i'm not even sure if they are supposed to be called libraries).

I can't find ANY "idiots guide to compiling Synchronet on Windows usinig VS2019", so here I am.

When WinXP crashes here's some of the data is spits out, I can't find logs anywhere referencing this crash, and clicking Debug doesn't work. (I don't have VS2019 installed in XP because it's not supported, it's running from my host Win10 OS).

Yeah, I'm trying to update to the latest build, but Windows XP keeps crashing when I copy over the latest build (using the downloaded nightly build, I can't get windows to compile sbbs, there's no directions anywhere for idiots who don't use MSVS2019 regularly.

Now slyedit isn't working, and fseditor is displaying 0's everwhere.

Might have to install a Win10 VM and see if that fixes the problem.

Is there instructions for IDIOTS on how to build sbbs3 using Visual Studio 2019?

Yes, that's what I did, and using the nightly build causes the system to crash on startup. I've been updating my system with the nightly build like every 4-6 weeks for the last few years and this crash is new, but not much else has changed on my end.

I don't know whats going on, but either my OS has a serious issue (maybe VirtualBox is doing something, I dunno), or maybe the code doesn't like XP anymore.

I can run an older build (dated 7/8/2019), but since I didn't save my data files from back then, everything is hosed.

I'll wait a few more nights, maybe someone will realize something, or I'll see if I can get a Win10 VM running.

I'm not clear: why do you think that if you build the latest code with the same tools and libs that I'm using, that it would behave any differently?

I was using MSVC2013 before this year, so if you wanted to use the older dev tools to possibly fix the issue, you'd need to use MSVC2013, not MSVC2019.

Did you say you're running on Windows XP? I used to run my Synchronet on Windows XP, and I noticed it would crash sometimes, particularly when reading messages with my message reader. I moved it to Windows 7, and now I don't see those same crashing issues.

It seems like Synchronet is still crashing for me from time to time (on Windows 7 32-bit), but I haven't nailed down exactly what's causing the crashes yet. It seems like when I build a debug build and try to debug it, I don't see the crashing issue when I try to reproduce it.

It seems to be crashing at semi-random times for me though. I have a tool that's set up to periodically check whether sbbsctrl is running, and if not, it runs sbbsctrl. Sometimes I can tell Synchronet seemed to crash and was re-launched (I tend to run it maximized, and after it re-launches, it's not maximized; also, sbbsctrl's taskbar icon is the last taskbar icon after it re-starts, and usually I like to have sbbsctrl's taskbar icon be the first one).

Yeah, I know, that didn't read too clear after I posted it, sorry.

What I didn't know was that building the code and just using the nightly build would yeild the same results. I'm not (as if you couldn't tell) too savy at "coding".

Don't know if this makes it less clear or not.. I wanted to get the compiler working, because... "why not, it's fun to watch!"

I love flipping through source and trying to figure out how X thing happens.

Honestly just trying to update, don't care how it happens, but right now it's not working. Don't know if it's Synchronet or my WinXP VM.

Worse case scenario I could post a youtube video of whats happening. Maybe I'm just not explaining it correctly.

Because I restored the exec folder to the 7/8/2019 version. Problem is my other folders are using more recent cvs builds causing all these issues. I guess I could pull old files and roll back everything.

This crash occurs 2 seconds after starting sbbsctrl.exe (not running as a service) Don't think the board itself is crashing because while the error message is displayed sbbsctrl continues to boot normally.

I'm considering installing a Win10 VM or making the leap to linux...

sbbsctrl.exe is crashing on Windows XP. Your options, the way I see it, are to:

1. Experiment with the source code and different (e.g. older) build tools
2. Upgrade to a newer version of Windows

this almost sounds like a memory corruption problem... it doesn't rear its head until some code in the corrupted area tries to execute... these can be very hard to track down... sometimes debug builds can hide the problem for a longer while for various reasons... we've seen similar bugs in the 20 year old flightgear simulator... some of them have taken months and months and months to track down... in each case debug backtraces were where the indications of corruption were found... eventually, a cause would be located and fixed and the chase for the next one would start...

sometimes it is a data or code alignment problem... sometimes a buffer overrun... sometimes it has been a counter variable that's gone negative and not been checked...

And I thought I was the last hold-out!

I mentioned the two problems I'd run into with Windows XP - the IPV6 issue and the boot-up errors that you fixed a couple of weeks ago.

Shame, because a cut-down version of XP makes a VM with a tiny footprint.

I've mentioned before, anyone with the ability of getting to at least Windows 7 should run the Windows 10 updater before Windows 7 goes EOL.

If you're in the mood for some light reading, pick up MINIX, the source code and a textbook are available. Version 2 taught me a lot about how code interacts with hardware.

I had the same experience.. I got my BBS set up in a Win10 VM but it seemed very slow, so I set up a Win7 VM instead.

I thought Windows 8 and above (including 10) were supposed to be able to run on fairly low resources, since Microsoft tried to make the more recent versions of Windows able to run on both PCs and tablets (which might not have many resources).

EOL is Jan 21st, 2020, of course EOL for XP was like 7 years ago.
