• Learning HTML/Java

From Frank@VERT/THEDARKC to All on Fri Sep 9 16:33:00 2005
Can anyone make a recomendation on some reading material or something a
*NOVICE* HTML user can check into to try and better understand HTML script
    language.

If I am ever going to have a chance of doing anything with Synchronet-32
I'm going to have to hit the books or remain stranded in 16 bit land.

    Thanx in advance
    Frank

If you want to learn JavaScript, I recommend the O'reilly "Rhino" book: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/jscript4/

Or you can use the free online JavaScript guide and references here: http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Core_JavaScript_1.5_Guide http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Core_JavaScript_1.5_Reference

Of course, JavaScript is not the *only* HTML scripting language. And JavaScript is used in Synchronet for much more than just HTML generation, but getting familiar with JavaScript is a good thing, for sure, for any Synchronet sysop.

Just to to toss in a few other resources... I like the JavaScript Bible as a starting book myself...

    JS Bible: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0764557432
note: don't bother with the "Gold" edition, the beginning chapters in
that version are only on the cd, get 5th edition, and if you want more,
    get the gold edition then..

Also a really good javascript documentation is the MS 5.1 docs for JScript, which is essentially the same thing, with the exception of the ActiveXObject that is MS specific, it's probably the best reference for JS imho.

Yeah, it is windows only, I think there is a CHM viewer for gnome now,
but not sure how hard it is to get working. MS combined all the script
help into one big help now, this version is from before the merge, it
is generally really easy to find what I am looking for in here.

Note, this doesn't cover some of the newest stuff in SpiderMonkey (the version of JavaScript used by Synchronet).
