How is "user" more informal than "person" in this context? And why would it be a problem?

"User" seems totally reasonable. It refers to the person using the BBS. "Person" might be a little too general or ambiguous. I'm not sure how "person" would make more sense here. Could you give some examples from text.dat where you think "person" would make more sense?

This reminds me of an old film from the 70's where a group of businessmen developed an adavanced simulation (similar to the matrix) in order to test out
variables that could affect the economy att he world level.

In the story an "simulated" person becomes aware his environment is not real because he can recallprevious versions each time a variable is altered, and also notices hgih profile people appearing and disappearing near a set of telephones in a public area.

He picks up the handset on one of the special courtesy phones, and the operator asks if he's ready to leave. He agrees and is transported to the outside world. He begins to question how he, a fabrication of a simulation can exist outside of it, then comes to the conclusion the "visitors" to his reality are not really outside, and are part of a larger simulation themselves.

Isn't that very human-centric? What about non-people and bots or ai
personas. We wouldn't want to use non-inclusive terms.

Yeah, what about uplifted animals? What if my dog wants to get on my BBS? Or a dolphin, or Kimolu and Matt from the Cerritos (This is a Star Trek: Lower Decks reference)?
