• TLS errors?

From poindexter FORTRAN@VERT/REALITY to All on Thu Oct 29 17:13:58 2026
I'm seeing the following errors in my terminal server log. If I reboot, the errors go away.

10/29 05:12:07p 2768 TLS ERROR 'Requested item not found in object' (-43) getting remote certificate
10/29 05:12:08p 2768 TLS ERROR 'Requested item not found in object' (-43) getting remote certificate
10/29 05:12:08p 6100 TLS ERROR 'Requested item not found in object' (-43) getting remote certificate
10/29 05:12:08p 3172 TLS ERROR 'Requested item not found in object' (-43) getting remote certificate
10/29 05:12:08p 5012 TLS ERROR 'Requested item not found in object' (-43) getting remote certificate

    repeated, ad in finitum.

    Any thoughts?

Those errors come from a JavaScript module making an *outbound* TLS
connection (a Socket with ssl_session = true, e.g. an HTTPS request via http.js), not from inbound TLS to your terminal server. Builds before 2026-10-25 send every JS socket log message to the Terminal Server log, no matter which server runs the script, so the script could be running under Services, the Web Server, the Mail Server, or as a timed event. The
leading number on each line is the socket, not a node or thread.

What appears to be happening: cryptlib remembers the TLS session for each
host name it connects to, and the next connection to that host resumes
the saved session. A resumed handshake doesn't include the server's certificate, so Synchronet's request for it returns -43 ("not found"). Synchronet treats that as fatal and closes the socket, even though the
TLS connection itself succeeded. Restarting clears cryptlib's session
cache, which is why a reboot makes it stop for a while. Several sockets
failing within one second suggests a script retrying in a loop.

This looks like the same bug as GitLab issue #1148 (a second HTTPS request
to the same host fails on Windows, also seen with letsyncrypt.js). A fix
is being written up for Deuce to review.

Two things that would help confirm it:

    1. Which build are you running (the git hash on the startup banner)?
    2. Have you added or updated a module recently that makes HTTPS (or other
TLS) connections, and which host does it connect to?
