Are you familiar qith Qubes? Because I suspect you'd like it. It is designed to offer seamless desktop integration while every application runs inside an isolated container.
The drawback is hardware requerinments are very very bad.

Truthfully, I think that I was on to something. I'd quite forgotten about my post, but in the meantime, I spun up virtual machines based on personality dimensions.
1. Openness -- For Web research and RSS
2. Conscientiousness -- For email and LinkedIn
3. Extroversion -- For BBSing and other stuff that I don't do yet in this category
