I had a slow day at work today and re-imaged and cleaned up some of the old laptops. We had a handful of Thinkpad T450s laptops, nice little systems. Mostly i5-5200s, 8 GB of RAM, and a 500 GB SATA drive AND a 16 GB PCIe SSD card.

Odd, I wondered if you'd try to set up the SSD as a boot drive?

Did some poking around, and apparently they had some feature called Express Cache - load a specific driver and the system uses the SSD as a huge cache. Interesting idea, although you could do the same thing with a hybrid SSD drive. I think the ones I used to buy, Seagate Barracuda XTs, had 4GB of cache.

The takeaway was that with a fresh copy of Windows 10 and the Express Cache enabled, it ran pretty well.

Considering that I saw 500 GB SSDs for $58, seems like a solution to a
problem that's gone away.

Depends on how old, and the school. I know a local parochial school that was running PC's that were 6-7 years old, and those were the newer of the bunch. Of the local companies who would donate pc's many were keeping their pc's
past the usual 3 year life cycle period, and up to 6-7 years. Since the companies usually leased their pc's so they wouldn't be taxed as capital,
once they hit the 3 year period they were paying way more than the pc's were worth on the market. The lease company wanted one of my clients to pay to
take them back since they couldn't sell them off easily to a "slightly used" reseller.

Not too long ago, I was reading a post online from a German teacher I had in high school. She was complaining that the schools don't have much funding to buy new software & books & such, and they had some old learning software that wouldn't work on new computers. She said they actually had to have their IT guy find a computer old enough to run the software.

It's a mixed bag depending on the school district and student population. In the past it used to be the parochial and private schools had loads of money. There was one well do school district next to the one I lived in because of the
way
they were able to take donations from local growing industry. For example, when the nuclear power plant was being built in their township, the power company donated large sums to ensure the new school was top of the line, with an olympic swimming pool. This was something you'd imagine a school with a large student population would get, however the average class size was 100
per grade. The state changed the rules on how donations were accepted, yet
the school could maintain running the pool by charging access on non event nights.

I think you can find stuff like that at Tigerdirect or other places that sell post-lease equipment.
