Show Stopper!: The Breakneck Race to Create Windows NT and the Next
Generation at Microsoft Hardcover June 1, 1994
by G. Pascal Zachary (Author)
I'm reading this now, it's akin to Scott Kidder's "The Soul of a New
Machine", documenting the personalities and the challenges underneath
the race to create a new system.
At the time, Windows NT 3.51 just seemed like a bigger, slightly off version of Windows 3.x with worse hardware support. Under the hood, it was a lot
more - and this book outlines what they needed to do to make a new
platform look, feel and be compatible with Windows 3.x.
This one's interesting to see stories of Bill Gates the engineer/CEO, to
look back on the Microsoft/IBM alliance, the rise of Windows 3.x and the
effort to create Windows NT - and what a leap in technology NT was.
It's amazing to recall how hard IBM got played by a smaller company that understood the market.
No spoilers, I'm not done yet!
