So how many of you out there actually served in the military? I don't
mean the National Guard (the weekend warriors), I mean a real branch of the US military. Navy, Air Force, Army, or the Marines.

I did 4 years active duty in the Air Force.. Went in in '96.. Security Police, and they transitioned to Security Forces while I was in.

Navy, Air Force, Army, or the Marines.Six years, USAF November 1980 to December 1986. Started running The Lost Chord Commodore BBS while stationed at Griffiss AFB (Rome, NY) in 1986. That base is long closed, and the BBS is now PC-based. Best assignment? Galena AFS (Galena, AK) - also now closed. Assignment I liked least? Tyndall AFB (Panama City, FL). They are still open. Worked weather, supported all MajComs including AAC (Alaskan Air Command). Tyndall and Griffiss were both ROCC locations, so NORAD was where it was all at.
I spent 20 years active duty in the Navy, with duty stations mostly in the Pacific (Guam, Hawaii, Japan, San Diego). I was on 5 different ships during those 20 years, sometimes up to a year at a time.
I enlisted in 1980. I saw Desert Shield/Desert Storm from a Navy ship. Helped launch a ton of Tomahawk missiles in '91.
I retired in 2000, so I missed all the stuff post 9/11. By then I was working for private industry.
But in 2012 I got a job working for a support services company on behalf of Naval Station San Diego. I'm reaching 10 years with that and getting ready to retire for good. With COVID, I've been working from home a lot, and splitting my time between my native Atlanta area and San Diego. Mostly in Atlanta.
I ran a BBS in Okinawa that I called the Okinawa Times. I also ran a similar board in Oahu for a short bit. But that was between ship duties. So when I was on board ship, I shut down the BBS.
I was thining of starting up a new BBS after finding this place, but after seeing all these trolls, I think I'll run Mystic instead. Or WWIV. I ran WWIV 3 and 4 back in the day. Also ran RemoteAccess for a while.
I saw the Back to the BBS series on YouTube. Kinda fun to see where BBSes are now in the 2020s.
However, I think everyone should be in the military for at least 4 years after you get out of high school. Before college. Before getting a job. Man or
woman, doesn't matter. You learn to be a real person, not some idiot in their mom's basement. I decided to stay in and get training as a electronics tech working on radar display systems. That was fun.
And I do fully agree with the COVID vaccine mandate that Biden has put in place. Before that, sailors were getting COVID left and right. The vaccine mandate has helped signifcantly. It's a matter of our nation's defense at stake. You don't want a whole ship sick with COVID. We came close a few times, but we managed to dodge the full bullet.
So after 42 years, I'm getting ready to get out and enjoy playing with my 5 grandchildren. And maybe start a BBS again. Probably not Sync a this point. Way too many idiots on here. LOL!

I completely agree.. it would do America good to have some sort of mandatory service. It sure helped straighten my punk a** up! ;)

Just wanted to quickly thank you for your service here. :)

In Kentucky, being in the Guard doesn't mean you don't get called up.
There were several units that got called up during the wars and did a lot
of fighting. There is one artillery unit that has pretty much been
deployed in every war from WWII to Desert Storm, minus Vietnam. I think they got out of that one because of the nature of how we fougt it.
Some of the small towns here have memorials to their Guard and Reserve
units that got wiped out during WWII. I don't knock them.

Same here. My brother-in-law was in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was every bit as much of the Soldier that I was when i served in the U.S. Army Active Duty. He served two tours in Iraq during Iraqi Freedom. I have nothing but respect for any of my fellow combat vets.
