Hello Everyone! I'm new to BBS - wanted to try it out, given I've heard a
bit from podcasts and websites. Not sure what I'm doing, but want to learn. Any guidance would be great - Thanks!

Have fun, and try out a few different boards, in particular those which have had their own customisations. Some have chat, some have inter-bbs chat.

ANSI art will appear quaint and interesting.

I myself am here because you can chat and message without all the "noise" that can exist elsewhere.

You're doing what everyone else is doing, communicating, there isn't really a wrong way of doing it unless your talking to the wrong person at the right time.

Oh my, you mean I'm not the only one that remembers the 'old days'? Oh boy... I think I just found my new people!

Someone want to help me find a corner of the house to set up my 1040STe in ? And how does one get a landline working nowadays? I think I probably still a SupraModem 24/96 and another 144LC in a closet somewhere?

You'll have to find out who your local telco provider is to get a landline
made active. Depending on the BBS, you'll need long distance calling, and
    that could get expensive.

Ya... that's not exactly happening. I know the local telco, they're the ones I get my 500Mbps fibre from. But the lines in my area are so bad, DSL isn't even an option, so probably not going to be able to get more than about a 19.2k connection even if I pulled out one of the Courier's I decommissioned 10+ years ago from Cisco installs... Not willing to pay LD Charges x time for a 19.2k connection :-D

Lines were cruddy where I'm at too. I'd average 31.6k. No cable, no fiber,
    no DSL, No WISP.

Don't complain much. I am on Wimax.

The government paid an ISP around two million dollar to take fibre to my town. They left an access point just by the edge of it. ONly a couple of houses actually got connectivity, but the government wrote our town off as no longer excluded from the fibre network.

THe funny thing is that if you are far from the access point they won't connect you, and if you offer to pay for the connection they will refuse. ANd if you are an ISP and ask to connect from their access point (which is publicly available as per the government funding contract) they will give you an outreageous quote so you don't connect.

There is no way this fibre network is profitable at all, and it certainly is of no use since the people who got coverage are 80-year-olds who don't have computers or anything. The government paid for nothing and the ISP pocketed the money.
