So just to test Windows server 12 Firewall I se up a VPS with firwalls turned off to see how long it would take for sniffer bots and hackers to find and try to destroy.
2 weeks is all it took, then suddenly ggogle and Oprea were installed automatically.
as well as a couple of other un needed unwanted programs, then the hackers were able to easily shut my VPS down over and over.
this was just a test so no harm done, I then setup the windows firewall and closed all ports except the 3 I need to run my server I have set up.
Although it worked quit well I really like Ubuntu's UFW firewall for it's simplicity and ease best.

... You don't have to know anything to have an opinion.

it's originally $9 per month but I got a code from a friend so it's 1/2 price for 6 months, cheapest I've seen a windows VPS, I still prefer Linux.

Not that it's related, but back in the day a (late) friend of mine set up a BBS and didn't advertise it at all. Within weeks it had users, I suppose via wardialing and word of mouth.

it could be HIS system was compromised or the actual operator did that to your system. i have ran into some shady vps sellers.

    That's pretty cool,

In the early 90's I advertised my BBS by making a Database program that made a page formated list in a txt file, I would then compile all the working BBS numbers I got and verify they were still running every month, then I uploaded the list to a few BBS's each month.
I also uploaded the database program I made and it's now on several shareware CD's like Owlware.

It was a fun experiment, Also looking at the Graphs from the VPS before and after show's how much traffic an unguarded system can get.

... If not for the last minute, nothing would get done.

It's a decent VPS service, the code was for referring a friend (me), and he also got a discount extension for 6 months because I used the code he gave me.
The reason I went for it was because it has 4GB RAM and 2 cores.

I can get Linux VPS's for $5 a month but they only have 1GB RAM and a single core.

i used vpses for quite a while but i found out that it's just better to pay more and get a dedicated server. i split the cost with friends and they get their use out of it.

i also used to get donations for all the services i ran but i don't like taking donations. i would feel obligated to keep it up and not just run it for myself.

Oh the server I run is not a BBS on the VPS, I run my BBS on a dedicated thin client PC with windows 7, it has 8GB RAM and 4 cores.

I mean the VPS could be riddled with all kinds of crap, Chrome and Oprea and 2 other programs got Automatically installed when the firewall was down.
but the VPS is isolated so even if I have to re-install everything no real harm done.
Just goes to show that a firewall is a must.
