Hello! Just a reminder we have a unofficial Discord server for the Synchronet BBS platform. Would love to have you join us if you are interested in learning more or getting support... Link is here: https://discord.gg/Q5KBBKY
I don't use Synchronet myself, but I'll drop in just to be part of the conversation :)

Funny that you make that kind of comment, considering you use
Synchronet. But aside from Synchronet and Mystic, how many other
modern BBS packages are out there that are currently being
maintained? I can't really think of any.

I haven't used Discord much, but occasionally I've dropped in on
the Synchronet IRC channel, only to see little to no activity at
all.
The Synchronet IRC channel (like many others) goes for periods of
time with little activity, and then there'll be a big flurry of
activity for a while. I keep a client idling in there and read
back through it to keep caught up. There are sometimes very nice "nuggets" of info to be had there. Of note are the frequent posts
from developer's CVS accounts which give advance notice of
recent/pending changes to SBBS and utils.
True, and with Mystic, the "maintaining" is quite spotty at best.
The author disappears for long periods of time, with no
explanation or warning. It's been a few months since he was
seen/heard from. <SHRUG>

well irc is like an answering machine. you post a msg there and someone gets back to you later. people that drop in and leave in 2 minutes think it's always dead. people are at home at different times and are from different parts of the world, so take that into account.
it's not funny that i made that kind of comment. i'm saying mystic isnt good as synchronet.
I know what you meant. It also sounded like you were implying that Synchron wouldn't look so great if Mystic didn't exist. Which sounded funny since yo use Synchronet.. (though I suppose you're going to suggest I thought that
I had forgotten about some of those. I don't really hear many sysops talkin about those, but I guess those are still around.
If people want to discuss Synchronet that way, then why not just post on Dove-Net and look for a reply later? To me, chat rooms always seemed better suited for more immediate live chat (and that's how I've always used IRC).

I guess that's not really my preferred style of communication. I used
to use IRC quite a lot in the past, and usually I visited chat rooms
that were fairly active. Since the Synchronet IRC channel is fairly inactive with periods of activity, I'd rather just use the Synchronet support sub-boards on Dove-Net. I can post a message on Dove-Net and
not have to idle in a chat room to see a response.

I've heard that. Does there tend to be a lot of requests for bug
fixes and new features in Mystic?
I think we're lucky that Rob Swindell takes time almost every day
to respond to requests and makes updates to Synchronet. I know
he has a day job and a family, and sometimes it can be hard to
have much time for side projects & things.
Yep, I get that. One advantage that the IRC has though, is that
if you ask a question, and the right person/people are there at
the moment, you get a nearly instant reply and hopefully that
resolves your question right then and there. Echomail/Dovenet
would generally take several hours, at best. Again, I use it with
an idle client and then "check in" several times a day to see
what's been talked about. Takes nearly zero resources and is just
another nice source of information.

log on, post something, and log off, then log on later to see if

Why is that? Why is there little activity on Synchronet IRC?? I don't like installing software I don't use much so I won't use Discord. I suppose I could use the web interface but anything web seems to slow to me.
I share your sentiments about web stuff, both chat and forums. :)
Chat, BBS, IRC, all of it is just an exchange of text messages. I don't understand the need for Discord Servers and GUI clients just to exchange messages. To each his/her own I guess.

It is sporadic, but it's there on Discord. IRC I find hardr to track, due t the lack of notifications (idling doesn't work for me).

Of course I have but while working for an ISP I was taught to move away from e GUI stuff. It was much more productive to use CLI. I can have 10 ssh windows
pen on my system without windows applications sucking up memory. Hey.. I just ticed this thread is in Dovenet/Advertisements. Anyone else notice that?

Discord works that way too. It tracks where you were since the last time you connected to that server and shows you where there are new messages...

Where's that? Do you mean MarisaG's discord server? She has a
facebook BBS page too. I can't handle that Web stuff. Nice to visit but
I don't want to hangout there. I used to enjoy IRC but it's not the way
it was 10-15 years ago. I have to laugh. If I logon to freenode and
join ##chat there's over 100 users in the channel and nobody chatting. What's that all about? Are they all in Private? I hungout on
us.dal.davis 30-plus back in the day. Lot's a fun back then. It was
hard to get a word in it was so busy. People coming in and out of the room. Crazy busy. Fun Fun.

Yes, seems idlers are the order of the day now. I used to hang out on a hea of channels on 4 or 5 networks and there was always some chat going on. IRC was prett full on 20 years ago and a lot of fun. I was pretty much an IRC addict. :)

Depends... there are still some very active channels. Some of the
Linux channels I check routinely have over 1000 users in them.
Granted, most of them are idlers, but there is usually some
conversation going on. The #synchronet channel on irc.synchro.net
is often quiet for periods, but then has a pretty good flurry of
activity for a while.
It's easy enough to read back a few screens to catch up on where
you were when you left.
